SOOOO we’re in week 8 and that means I’ve got 4 weeks of Biol1362 left! Time is really going by fast and waits on no one. This week’s biochem tutorial was based on enzymes. We focused more on the titraion of lysine which was pretty simple. For my proteins and amino acids assignment, which was due this week, we had to answer some questions on certain types of diseases. I have an interest in topics such as immunology and pathology, so any opportunity to learn about the causes and effects of diseases is very exciting. Doing this assignment encouraged me to do some research on iron deficiency anemia. This type of anemia is the most common type and is as a result of the body lacking red blood cells. Red blood cells or erythrocytes is the body’s method of transporting and carrying oxygen throughout the body.When a minimum amount of iron is available to use, the body uses up stored iron in the liver. The iron content is gradually depleted and the body begins to make abnormal red blood cells and do not have a normal hemoglobin-carrying capacity, as do normal red blood cells.The disease can also be caused by a decrease in the oxygen-binding capability of each hemoglobin molecule due to deformity or lack in numerical development as in other types of hemoglobin deficiency. Hemoglobin normally carries oxygen from the lungs to the capillaries and thus anemia leads to hypoxia which is a lack of oxygen in organs. Since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.
Patients with iron deficiency anemia experience common symptoms such as fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, and coldness in hands and feet. Severe anemia may lead to abnormal heart rhythms, heart murmur, shock and heart failure.
